The Basics Of Statistics For Lawyers

By Linda Ruiz

One of the most practical fields of math is none other than the field of statistics as it can be able to measure a lot of things in many different professions. It is a branch of math that is especially important in the field of law as many of those who are in the field of law will be able to use it. Just to give people an idea of how this is used in this profession, here is an overview on statistics for lawyers.

Now not only the lawyers would make use of statistics but even the judges, the prosecutors, and everyone who is in the field. Now this is often used when it comes to the documentation of evidence because this would need hard facts. Now in order to produce real facts, one would often have to do statistical processes in order for the answers to come out.

Now one of the first things that one would be learning would be data types. Basically, this lesson would first classify each type of data so that one would be able to know what type of treatment he will use on that certain type. There are many subcategories under this lesson like data with one variable, data with two variables, and many more other subcategories that may be useful in the field.

Now the next lesson that the students will learn would of course be probability. Now probability is extremely important because sometimes, it would take probability testing in order to come up with certain figures used in evidence. Now there are a lot of probability testing methods that one will be using also.

Some of the subcategories that one would be learning here is random sampling, purposive sampling and other types of sampling methods. One will also be learning all about basic probabilities like basic probability and conditional probability. Of course a concept that would really be emphasized is the Bayes rule.

Now another topic that one would be learning would actually be inferential statistics. Now this type would have lessons that are related to point estimation or hypothesis testing. Now hypothesis testing is indeed a very important topic in law simply because this would be able to produce figures that cannot seem to be solved.

Now one would also learn how to regress two variables namely the independent variable and the dependent variable in order to see the relationship of two concepts. Now there would be the linear regression to connect an independent variable and a dependent one. There would also be the multiple regression which would link an independent one to more than one dependent variables.

So as one can see, one will be learning quite a lot while he would be taking up statistics. Of course while the students would be learning their lessons, they will also be utilizing case studies in order to learn more about how to apply them in legal cases. By making use of cases, students will be able to apply statistical theories.
