Examples Of The Pharmacy Law

By Christa Jarvis

The United States and many other countries usually have all the pharmaceutical operations regulated under some rules and regulation. The main purpose of pharmacy law is to avoid having the lives of the citizens being put in danger because of the corrupt pharmaceutical system. Many people have other ulterior motives such as abuse and harmful uses when they purchase drugs. These are some of the rules that are used to prevent this from happening.

The first rule is that all drugs must be categorized under the following five schedules. The schedule one drugs represent a group of drugs that are very highly addictive. These mainly include the street drugs that are never prescribed for medical use. Some examples include heroin, marijuana and cocaine. The schedule two drugs are also very addictive but their difference with schedule one is that they have some medical usefulness. One example of drug that falls under this category is morphine.

The next schedule of medicines is or those drugs that are not really that addictive. They however still have some potential of abuse thus should be handled with care. The next two levels is for drugs that have a significantly low level of abuse potential and addictive nature. Every druggist must make sure they know about these schedules so that they can classify their stock accordingly.

The law also requires all pharmacists and any person who prescribes drugs to get registered at the US government prior to their operations. They are required to fill in a form provided by the drug enforcement department after every one year. There are however various pharmacies that are exempted from this rule if they fulfill some set terms and conditions.

The illegal market has quite a high demand for medicines and this has significantly increased the robbery cases in many drug stores. Therefore, the pharmacists are advised to enforce some measures to ensure the robbery circumstances are significantly decreased. All their medicines must be protected in a cabinet every time. They must always have an electronic alarm and should not hire any individual who has ever done any drug related crime in the past.

These laws also stipulate that the drugstores must always make sure they have a record of all transactions made. These include a record of their accounts and a list of all the receipts and payments they made. The law specifically states that the second schedule drugs be documented differently in place that can be seen easily when needed. The compilation of inventories should be done every two years.

The validity of the prescriptions provided by the patients must always be verified before any medicine is dispensed. The pharmacist must make sure the dosage is for one person. The prescriber must include their name and signature on the prescription document. The patient should also have their name written on the document with a clear indication of the required dosage. The pharmacist must make sure that the prescription has been given by an authorized medical officer.

Nonetheless, there are some exceptions of this law that allow pharmacists to issue schedule five medications without the patient having a prescription. The drugs must however only be dispensed to people above 18 years and people who really need the medicine.
