Psychology as both an art and a science studies the individual, family and the society with the aim of understanding the mental functions and triggers for specific behaviors that are hard to explain. Among the various branches of psychology, 3 interesting types of psychology are discussed below.
Abnormal Psychology
This type of psychology studies patterns behaviors, emotions, and thoughts that are not usual. These patterns may be or may not be the courses of the mental disorder. This study's main objective is to understand the shifts in the nature and interactive patterns that are not normal and are adapted by an individual. The study utilizes psychopathology and clinical psychology in researching about the possible causes of the psychological disorders.
The study of abnormal psychology involves two types of behaviors, which include maladaptive and adaptive behaviors. Maladaptive behaviors indicate that various problems exist and also indicate that individuals are vulnerable and may not be in a position to cope with stress caused by environmental factors, which in turn lead to the problems.
Biological Psychology
This involves the use of biological principles in the study of genetic, physiological, and developmental behavioral patterns in both human beings and animals. The study basically involves investigations of nerves, brain circuitry, neurotransmitters, and other biological processes, which are associated with abnormal and normal human behavior.
An example of biological psychology is the comparison of behaviors in goslings with early behaviors in human infants then a theory is formulated basing on the two phenomena. Biological variables may also be measured including anatomical or physiological variables and comparing them with a behavioral variable. Biological physiology is also known as Biopsychology.
Counseling Psychology
This type of psychology deals with research in several broad categories including the process of counseling its outcome, supervision and training, development in career and counseling, and health and prevention. All psychologists agree that counseling psychology involves the study of a person's strength and assets, the interactions between a person and his environment, the relationship between education and career development of a person, and also focusing on intact personalities.
In counseling, the relationship or bond between a counselor and the person being counseled is the attitudes and feelings both of them have towards one another and also the way they express the feelings. The relationship may be described in three ways as:
• A working alliance
• Counter-transference or transference which means that the person being counseled has a distorted perception of the counselor
• Personal relationship.
One important benefit of psychology is that people get to know
more about different people and the reasons as to why they behave the
way we do. By studying psychology, individuals can also get to know the
things that they are afraid of and those that interest them
