Virginia Free Divorce Records

Divorce records in Virginia are one of the most accessed documents in the state. With the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, the divorce records are made open for the residents to obtain.

One of the common reasons why the residents of Virginia request for a copy of a divorce certificate is to use it in government transactions. Some processes in the government would call for a copy of such document before the request can be processed. Thos who are updating the family tree would refer to the divorce records to get necessary information that they need to update the family registry. It is the least prioritized document when conducting genealogy but it can still create confusions for future generations if the separation is not updated in a timely manner. If a divorced individual plans to marry again, he/she ill have to present the divorce papers before they can get approval for remarriage.

As the name suggest, divorce records contains details about the separation of a couple. One would know where and when the separation was granted. The document however, does not show further details about the separation. Information such as the reason for the divorce as well as the agreement about the children and the properties of the couple are not available for public access. This information is kept confidential to respect the privacy of the couple.

The state of Virginia only makes a divorce record open to the public once it has reached its 50th anniversary. Additionally, only records from since 1918 are available at the state office. Records before 1918 can only be requested at the county where the separation was made legal. A $12 processing fee needs to be paid in order to proceed with the request. Copies of divorce certificates are only released if the one requesting it is the divorcees or their immediate family. It is important to fill out the request form with the basic details of the separation.

All of the public records of Virginia are being managed at the Department of Health under the Vital statistics office. This includes the divorce records of the residents of Virginia. One has to first check with the said office and see if they can provide the divorce records from there, if not one may need to go to the office of the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce took place. Mail requests can be sent to the state office but it can take a while before the results of the search can be obtained.

The residents of Virginia can request for a copy of their personal document through the Internet. Included in the search are divorce records public. Through this, retrieval is made easy and fast since there is no need to go to any office. One simply needs to log on to a website that offers to search for the records for you. One can even choose to get it for free or for a certain fee. Most residents would go for the paid option to ensure the quality of the results.
