In law, a lawyer or attorney whose traditional function is to advise and defend clients, individuals or legal entities, in court, pleading to assert their interests and, more generally, to represent them. The number of lawyers has more than quadrupled in the United States since 1967, especially during the early 1980s.

There are three types: the first is based on the number of hours devoted to dealing with the case. The second is calculated at a flat rate regardless of time spent on processing the case. The third is based on the result (for example, a certain percentage awarded by a court). However, in some jurisdictions it is not possible to agree on an outcome or fee, so the success fee shall be supplemental to the flat rate.

The text drew attention in particular to the non-compliance with international standards in the administration of justice, the absence of guarantees of due process, the refusal to provide a fair and public trial and the right to counsel deplored and some forms of systematic discrimination.
