Telemarketing Fraud & Evaluation By A Qui Tam Attorney

By Bob Oliver

It's easy to see that fraud, for the most part, is conducted on the phone. No one can dispute the fact that the greatest amount of vulnerability exists where isn't face-to-face communication, meaning that the risk of fraud is elevated. One of the most serious subtypes to focus on has got to be telemarketing fraud. To say that this is an issue would be an understatement but those who consider themselves qui tam authorities will be able to draw more attention to this subject.

By definition, telemarketing fraud occurs when a victim is contacted over the phone because of a supposed offer. When an attractive deal is laid out, the victim is tricked into giving their credit card information, or even money in general, to the individual. There are many excuses given, by the criminal, such as the winning of a lottery that the individual had no idea that he or she entered to begin with. This is what starts the issue of telemarketing fraud.

Of course, one can make the argument that telemarketers are generally avoided, which is true. Many view telemarketers as annoyances which, try as they might, cannot easily shake off of their backs. People can tell when these telemarketers call, whether due to caller ID or what have you, meaning that they are better off not answering the phone. Of course, there are those who do, which only seems to open them up further to the matter of telemarketing fraud.

The protection of personal information is one of the many crucial points that a qui tam attorney will stress. With so much weight associated with credit card numbers and the like, keeping these elements to yourself will be for the best. It's also worth noting that you have outlets you can go to for filing complaints. The Federal Trade Commission, as authorities like Whistleblowers Against Fraud will tell you, is a great example of this. Simply put, you are not going to be short on options.

To many, telemarketing can be a hindrance and nothing more. To others, it can prove to be one of the avenues that leads to fraud; this is easily a stronger problem that has to be addressed. Telemarketing fraud can be committed, if the opportunity is open, meaning that individuals must take care when this occurs. When this matter is understood, action can be taken, which will ultimately result in a lesser chance of one's information being used against them.
