Marriage Records Kentucky

Kentucky marriage records are one of the most requested documents in the state. It has been made open to the public since the Freedom of Information act has been in place. This allows the residents of the state access to their personal documents.

There are several reasons why the people of Kentucky request for their marriage certificate. It is used by researchers who conduct genealogy. They use the document as reference in updating the information on the family tree. Another use of this document is for government transactions. Some requests in the government would require individuals to secure a copy of a marriage certificate, without it the request may be denied. The information that can be found on the document is used to validate the identity and the status of an individual especially if the request involves the couple. Checking the marital status is mostly done by single individuals and employers. They do this to make sure that the person they are dating is really single. Employers would verify the marital status of their people in order to process the benefits they offer to their employees.

As the name implies, a marriage certificate would show details about a couple's marriage. One would be able to now the real names of the bride and the groom who got married. When and where the event took place is also an important information that is available on the file. One can also find the names of the parents and the witnesses.

Retrieval of a marriage certificate follows certain guidelines. The document can only be released if the one requesting for it is either the bride or the groom or their immediate relatives. Others can still gain access to the marriage certificates of other people provided that they can secure a special order. One also needs to pay $6 processing fee in order to proceed with the request. The application form has to be completed with the required information about the document being requested. This can be the names of the couple and the place and the date of marriage. It is also important that the one who filed the request indicate their personal information on the application form. Once all of the requirements are followed and provided, the search can be done smoothly and complications can be avoided.

Marriages which took place since June 1958 are the only files available in the state office. Files before that date can only be obtained at the county office where it was originally registered. Some recent files may not be available in the state office; it can then be requested at the county of occurrence. Processing fee would not be the same for all counties. One can also request for the document through a mail order but the document can be obtained after several days.

Records of marriage can now be obtained even without waiting for a long period. This is made possible with the development of the Internet. People can now request for a copy of their marriage certificates online without spending too much energy and time. One can even choose from a free search or a paid search.
