What It Means To Be A Forensic Architect

By Stella Gay

When construction projects unearth a site of archaeological interest, all construction stops and the experts are called in. Sometimes construction will cease for months, years, or for all time depending on the historical value of the dig. Such a spot is where a day starts for the average forensic architect.

These professionals generally carry an architectural degree, but they have specialized their talents in such a way that they can recreate a scene of violence in history. The majority of their work focuses on recent historical events. Many of the Nazi war crime museums and memorials will have just such a person on staff.

There is great truth to the notion that the victor gets to write history, but these officers of analysis are attempting to correct some historical inaccuracies. This is a point of great pride, as it is only an unbiased account of an event which shows the agony and courage on all sides of any conflict. It can be difficult when they find evidence that contradicts the accepted narrative, but it is these inaccuracies which dishonor our ancestors.

These scientists are known to get information from sources like newspapers and magazines to satellite and sonar images from space. There have been many events on our planet which leave a scar deep within the Earth, and this scar can prove or disprove a narrative. Written eye-witness accounts must also be corroborated before they will propose to tell the story of an historical moment.

When bodies are first found law enforcement must analyze the remains themselves, then compare the person to those listed on the missing person roster. Without any sort of match, there is little police can do to find the killer. However, it has been found on many occasions that these human remains are older than originally anticipated, and constituted an archaeological dig rather than a typical crime scene.

In fact, these professionals are frequently called to task when an ancient site is uncovered that appears to have been a place of worship and human sacrifice. The site of the bog people is an excellent example. The forensics experts came in and discovered that there were most certainly elements of sacrificial rite apparent in the way the bodies were lain, but some of the methods of sacrifice were quite violent, and some of them may have been murdered but buried there to conceal the crime.

There is always at least one person on such a team who is an artist most talented with the gift of sculpture. This artist has a vast education in the structure of the human face, including the relative space between bone and flesh. Our bodies have a particular equation, and such an artist can recreate the face of a person who lived thousands of years ago.

By studying these sites of historical or archaeological interest, these professionals seek to establish a chain of events that accurately recreates the story. This information is then granted to the general public, and it becomes the official narrative taught to school children. Their research has corrected stories of many of histories most unforgettable moments.
